Always read your work aloud. You’ll hear things you can’t hear when you read it silently to yourself.
Proofread. And then do it again. And again.
Have another income source -- a day job or trust fund or a spouse who has a fulltime job with benefits.
Get used to rejection and learn from it. You can’t experience acceptance in the writer’s life without some rejection.
Keep at least 12 manuscripts circulating at all times. This increases your chances of publication.
Write the stories only you can write -- from your own life experiences. If you don’t tell those stories, who will?
Don’t worry about what other people say or think about you being a writer. Listen to your own inner voice and follow your line of words, as author Annie Dillard does.
Write down a plan for your writing success and stick to it. Set goals in this plan and reward yourself as you reach these goals.
Invest in your writing career. Go to writers’ conferences. Buy books about the art and craft of writing. Buy a computer. Invest in your writing future.
Keep writing and reading and don’t get discouraged. Believe in yourself. Bookstores and libraries are filled with books by published writers. People do get published and so can you.
